Google SketchUp House Assignment


1. Sketch out on paper first
  • Area of between 1,500 to 2,000 sq ft
  • Area of a rectangle is length x width
  • 3 bedrooms, two baths, kitchen, living room, etc.
  • Example: 65ft x 32ft = 2015 sq. ft. minus 35 sq. ft. entry = 1980 sq. ft.


2. Make sure units are feet - inches
  • Window, Model Info., Units, Architectural


3. Start in two dimensional mode
  • Camera, Standard Views, Top
  • Camera, Parallel Projection


4. Do outside walls
  • Use pencil tool. Start drawing, type in number of feet followed by foot sign (single quote or apostrophe to left of right return)
  • Make outside wall using offset tool

5. Make rooms and walls in two dimensions
  • Make inside rooms
  • Make walls
    • Measure with ruler 6 inches out from each line
    • Create guide line
    • Draw with pencil over the guide lines
  • Erase all of the little intersection lines

6. Raise the Walls
  • Switch back to camera, standard views, Iso an camera, perspective
  • Use the Push-Pull tool, raise walls (standard height for walls is 8')

7. Make windows and doors using rectangle tool;
punch out using push pull tool

8. Make Roof
  • With pencil trace along outside of top of house
  • Using offset tool expand e.g. 1 foot all around
  • Raise e.g. 6 inches using push pull tool
  • Draw center line across roof
  • Select that line
  • Raise roof
